In the Regional Association of Small Jewish Communities of Ukraine, a new project, dedicated to the contribution of Ukrainian Jews to the creation of the State of Israel “Originating from Shtetl” began to work.
The project takes place on the basis of the exhibition “The State of Israel – Ukrainian Roots”, prepared by the Zionist Federation of Ukraine in cooperation with the Kyiv Institute of Judaica with the support of the World Confederation of United Zionists.
Materials of project are completed with information on the Zionists and Israeli leaders who are from the so-called “Townships’ Association”.
Seven more presentations are planned in seven communities of Kyiv and Cherkasy regions with the support of the Dutch Humanitarian Fund.
The project was opened on March, 17 in the Korsun-Shevchenkivsiy Regional Cmmunity Center, where members of the local Jewish community and people interested in the history of Israel and Ukraine gathered. The guest of the event was the executive director of the Zionist Federation of Ukraine, Elena Zaslavskaya, who spoke about the activities of this organization and about how she, together with the director of the Institute of Jewish Studies, Yulia Smilyanskaya, created this exhibition.
The exhibition itself consists of twelve two-meter posters, each of which reveals the direction of development of the Jewish state, such as the army, medicine, urban planning, agriculture, energy, etc. through the prism of the biographies of those who, being born on the territory of today’s Ukraine, came to Palestine and by his ascetic work he brought closer the creation of the Jewish state.
At the opening of the project, the director of the Regional Museum of Jewish History “We come from Shtetl” Klavdiya Kolesnikova conducted a tour of the exhibition.
Before the eyes of those present, there passed a whole kaleidoscope of the names of the founders of Israel: Golda Meir, Dr. Haim Hisin, Yosef Barats, Itzhak Ben-Zvi, Yohanan (Zhenka) Ratner, Pinchas Rutenberg
Today, Israel not only exists, but is also among the twenty most developed countries in the world, and there is a great merit of those who come from Ukrainian lands.
