With the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and Vaad of Ukraine, a unique book dedicated to the golden fund of Ukrainian culture, namely, musicians, actors, singers – to all those who lived in Kyiv and made its unique contribution to the development of not only Ukrainian, but also the world culture.
The idea “Musical Addresses of Kyiv” arose in 1982 when Kyiv celebrated its 1500th anniversary. An outstanding event responded in the heart, of every resident with a desire to do something useful to his/her native city. Materials for the book had being recorded until 2016.
This invaluable archival treasure of the nation’s golden cultural fund has not lost its relevance today. On the contrary – it should cause the acute interest of many indifferent people because at the time there is a lot of painful problems due to protection of the ancient city and its unique monuments. The authors of the book combine the professionalism of radio journalists, obsessed with the very idea, and passionate desire to convey it to readers.
“The authors of the book, the staff of the Ukrainian Radio Vira Gorbatyuk and Ala Vyshneva had been collecting unique material for many years. These are the memories of the Tobylevych family, and the famous operatic singers Grishko and Hmyria, conductor Nathan Rakhlin and many others. A special place in the book is dedicated to the story of the so-called “Nightingale Home” – a story of the creation of the Dance Group of Virskiy and the Choir of Veriovka and the notorious Bandura Players Chapel. And all this with an attachment to the places where they lived and worked for many years. The book has many unique photos, as well as its pages are placed QR-codes for listening to music pieces directly while reading.
“We were looking for money for the publication for almost three years, when almost all the materials were ready, and tried to collect it with crowdfunding but this was still not enough for a full-fledged and full-color edition, and today, thanks to the grant from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the book can safely be called the encyclopedia of musical Kyiv that will be interesting not only to musicians, but also to lovers of history, guides from different cities of Ukraine and the world “, – told Elena Zaslavskiy, the project manager and designer.
The initiator of the project was the co-president of the Vaad of Ukraine, Josef Zisels. All materials of the book were prepared for publication by Alexander, Olena and Konstantin Dubovenkov.
Vaad of Ukraine thanks the Kharkov publishing house “NTMT” for invaluable help in preparing the publication.
